DATA VISUALIZATION AND STORYTELLING (DASCI 211)

This course teaches students the importance of successful data visualizations and intelligible data-driven stories in creating actionable insights. The course begins with the art of data storytelling. Students will then explore the Gestalt Principles of Design, focusing on psychological studies that describe how humans perceive visual elements.

Using real-world datasets and case studies, students will assimilate the necessary skills to analyze and explore data (exploratory data analysis) and fashion compelling visualizations, exhibiting good design elements and layers of information that, when weaved together as a narrative, can generate actionable insights and new levels of understanding.

The course will also introduce students to Python and visualization software (e.g., Tableau and PowerBI). They will be tasked to build data dashboards and storyboards – a way for practitioners to craft narratives from data easily.
